How to Make a Home Safe for Aging in Place

Preparing A Home for Safe Mobility

Many seniors appreciate the amenities and easy-going lifestyle of assisted living communities, but most people tend to want to age in place, in their lifelong homes surrounded by their family and loved ones. In addition, these communities can be cost prohibitive. While it may be intimidating to consider staying in a home that wasn’t designed for long-term care, there are many options, both temporary as well as permanent, that can help a person remain in the home well past retirement.

With loved ones living longer and needing more care, many families struggle with the best way to help an aging relative. The best course of action to take when making home modifications for seniors aging in place is to consider all areas of the home that present any trouble or concern. If something is especially difficult for seniors, like reaching the countertops or light switches, modify them. If there are potential tripping or falling hazards, eliminate them or change them accordingly.

Simple Steps to Prevent Falls

Safe Mobility

Falls are a major health hazard for older people in the home environment. Taking a proactive approach to modifying the home means that seniors can age in place independently while their loved ones have peace of mind knowing they are safer in their homes. Some of these simple, inexpensive adjustments can go a long way toward reducing risk.

  • Maintain a clean, clutter-free environment.
  • Have a secure, out of the way area for pets.
  • Put orange tape at doorways to indicate a change of floor surfaces.
  • Apply non-slip wax on floors.
  • Put non-skid treads on steps.
  • Remove throw rugs.
  • Fasten down dangerous electrical cords.
  • Add plug-in motion sensor lights.
  • Replace standard door knobs with lever handles.
  • Add textured, no-slip strips in the bathtub and shower.
  • Place a waterproof seat or chair in the shower.
  • Replace toilet with a high-profile toilet or a raised toilet seat.

A Familiar & Secure Environment

These are some of the modifications that can make aging in place a viable and safer option for those who do desire to age in place. Allowing older adults to stay in a familiar and cherished space is a critical and underrated factor in quality of life. But adapting a home to accommodate changing physical needs is a step some are hesitant to make. Keep in mind that what might look like minor steps to age-proof a home or asking for a little help with daily activities may appear to the aging individual as something bigger, like losing independence. It could be very upsetting and a major obstacle for change so have empathy, understanding and compassion.
