PA Department of Human Services - Medical Assistance Waivers

The Department of Human Services (DHS) is committed to increasing opportunities for older Pennsylvanians and individuals with physical disabilities to remain in their homes. Through managed care organizations, eligible individuals can receive quality care as well as long-term supports.

In Pennsylvania, the DHS administers multiple Medical Assistance/Medicaid waivers. Waivers offer an array of services and benefits such as choice of qualified providers, due process, and health and safety assurances.

They are referred to as waivers because the federal government will "waive" the rules for institutional care in order for Pennsylvania to use the same funds to provide supports and services for people closer to home - serving more people in communities rather than in facilities, giving them the opportunity to work, spend more time with their families, and experience an overall better quality of life.
